Lana Del Rey: Born to Die – the verdict
It's hard not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Lana Del Rey. She's hardly the first pop star in history to indulge in a spot of pragmatic reinvention that muddies her comfortable background, but you'd certainly think she was. You can barely hear the music over the carping, which appears to be getting louder as her debut album approaches: a cynic might say that's just as well, given the recent Saturday Night Live appearance in which she demonstrated her uncanny mastery of the vocal style deployed by Ian Brown during the Stone Roses' later years – she honked like the foghorn on Portland Bill lighthouse. But one off-key TV spot is surely not a career-ending disaster. Perhaps the arrival of Born to Die will silence the controversy and shift attention to the songs.
Or perhaps not. There's something impressive about her desire to brazen it out, but you do wonder at the wisdom of including Radio, one of those how-do-you-like-me-now? songs in which the singer revisits their terrible struggle to achieve fame. "No one even knows how hard life was," she sings, "no one even knows what life was like," which does rather invite the response: indeed not, but given that your father was not only extremely wealthy but so supportive that he took to the pages of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise to promote your debut album I'll hazard a guess at (a) probably not that hard and (b) basically quite nice.
There's always the chance that she's playing a character, although that seems doubtful, because when Lana Del Rey is in character, she really lets you know about it. The one truly disappointing thing about Born to Die isn't the sound, which understandably sticks fast to the appealing blueprint from Video Games and Blue Jeans: sumptuous orchestration, twangs of Twin Peaks-theme guitar and bum-bum-TISH drums. Nor is it her voice, which is fine: a bit reedy on the high notes, but nothing to get you reaching for the earplugs. It's the lyrics, which in contrast to Video Games's beguiling description of a mundane love affair, are incredibly heavy-handed in their attempts to convince you that Lana Del Rey is the doomed but devoted partner of a kind of Athena poster bad boy, all white vest, cheekbones and dangling ciggie. The reckless criminality of their lifestyle is expressed via hip-hop slang – "yo", "imma ride or die", and, a little Ali Gishly, "booyah" – and the depth of their love through romance-novel cliches ("you are my one true love"). It's Mills and Booyah.
The problem is that Del Rey doesn't have the lyrical equipment to develop a persona throughout the album. After the umpteenth song in which she either puts her red dress on or takes her red dress off, informs you of her imminent death and kisses her partner hard while telling him she'll love him 'til the end of time, you start longing for a song in which Del Rey settles down with Keith from HR, moves to Great Yarmouth and takes advantage of the DFS half-price winter sale.
The best thing to do is ignore the lyrics; easy enough given how magnificently most of the melodies have been constructed. Video Games sounded like a unique single, but as it turns out, it was anything but a one-off: the album is packed with similarly beautiful stuff. National Anthem soars gloriously away from a string motif that sounds not unlike that sampled on the Verve's Bitter Sweet Symphony. There's something effortless about the melodies of Diet Mountain Dew and Dark Paradise: they just sweep the listener along with them. The quality is high throughout, which is presumably what you get if you assemble a crack team of co-writers, including Heart FM king Rick Nowels, author of Ronan Keating's Life Is a Rollercoaster, Dido's White Flag and Belinda Carlisle's Heaven Is a Place on Earth.
You could argue that his presence recontextualises Born to Die, drawing it away from the world of the indie singer-songwriter she was initially thought to inhabit and firmly into the mainstream. It fits better there, where no one bores on about authenticity and lyrics matter less than whether your songs' hooks sink deep into the listener's skin. What Born to Die isn't is the thing Lana Del Rey seems to think it is, which is a coruscating journey into the dark heart of a troubled soul. If you concentrate too hard on her attempts to conjure that up, it just sounds a bit daft. What it is, is beautifully turned pop music, which is more than enough.

Extortion at the Residenz Theater in Munich
Premiere of extortion at the Residenz Theater in Munich 14.01.2012
Seiser Marie (left) and Dasha Poisel (right) - Photo Copyright: Hans Jörg Michel
The shows at the Residenz Theater 01/14/2012 staged the premiere of a stage play by Pippo Delbono, which bears the name short but pithy "blackmail" and be seen to be in Munich on 27.02.2012. But who is being blackmailed? And by whom and why? The internationally acclaimed Italian director Pippo Delbono extortion has, until recently, until the end of 2011, yet experienced every day in his home country. Figures of power, as the (now) former Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, to dangerous forms, especially when their power - as in this case - through the practice of multiple items is also multiplied. Who not only Prime Minister but still this is a media mogul also, the direct reporting to the press about themselves in desired orbits and thus the people 'blackmail' in some way.
But Pippo Delbono studied not only under the impression the last chapter of the Berlusconi saga dealing with the figures of power, but was also inspired by the Arab spring 2011. His play "extortion" is concerned in addition to the megalomania of power holders with their strategies and the possibilities of their failure.

Annual chart 2011
The year 2011: once again 12 turbulent months. For fear of dioxin and EHEC, we just had to watch what we eat, our panic from nuclear contamination has been rekindled and we had far too early to say goodbye to a great artist: Amy Winehouse.
Even positive events influence our year: the royal wedding in Great Britain moved millions of viewers, Germany is in economic recovery and a friend of mine had a one night stand, he just shouts from the background.
But in music has changed a lot: Hundreds of articles are alone in our Blog witnessed a prolific indie year. Since it is natural to take stock in chart form. Of course, while each of our bloggers will be speaking - and turns to a top 3 heading ..
Sasa S. (Regensburg): Top 3 best albums of 2011
First Place: The Naked and Famous, "Passive Me, Aggressive You"
"The New Zealand band can produce more than one hit. In truth, each title of the album is simply a masterpiece. Compositionally as well as Nine Inch Nails, only better - as catchy. "All of this" was actually decoupled before their top hit and sank a little. Never was "fucking" hidden in a beautiful song (0:45 min). "
Popout
Second Place: Ghost of Tom Joad, "Black Music"
"The band from Münster has gone through an evolution, from which some German band can still cut a big slice. From the post-punk to elegant indie-rock anthems, without having to be cheesy. The single of the same enthusiasm with dramatic use of percussion and to me is already a classic. "
Popout
Third Place: Hello Gravity, "Wunderkind"
"Indie-dreams now be made in Schrobenhausen. Hello Gravity are young and in my view, the new German indie-electro-pop hope (sorry bizarre!). Live they are highly recommended and because they make everything right in terms of image building, it will be interesting. The second single, "Sunshine from the Inside" is a huge Schmachthymne. '

Michael F. (Munich): Top 3 best songs of 2011
First Place: James Vincent McMorrow - If I Had a Boat
Popout
A song from 2010 No. 1 on the charts in 2011 years? YES! Why? Quite simply - because to me the song and artist in 2011 fell into the hands and I'm just grateful. James Vincent McMorrow and especially "If I Had a Boat" have accompanied me through all of 2011 and especially my stay in Portugal. Therefore, my number 1 - 2011!
Second Place: SBTRKT - Hold on
Popout
Yes - and No. 2 landed a song from 2011th Because "SBTRKT" has swept me like few other bands in 2011 and especially "Hold On". With its almost in a trance beats dislocations ends because it was my companion on many .. in the subway, commuter trains, ...
Third Place: Ben Howard - Old Pine
Popout
Ben Howard, who published his 2011 debut album, "Every kingdom" has played immediately into my top artist list. Actually, everyone would come to his worthy songs in this list! Unfortunately, I've just missed the good man live. I hope 2012 can make up for this.
Oliver W. (Berlin): Top 3 of the best DJ sets 2011
First Place: David Hasert: "Winds of Change"
Although I have not yet managed to party Like nobody, I follow closely any output that is produced by the cologne Like DJ collective. I especially like the DJ sets from David Hasert, discreetly between the up-beat and quietly go, but we will not always danceable.
David Hasert - Winds of Change by David Hasert
Second Place: Deep Black: "Watergate 03/12/2011"
The brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz aka Tiefschwarz (Souvenir Music) are together since 1996 in the techno scene on the road and regular guests in the clubs of the world. Their sound has evolved over the years of deep-house converted into more edgy techno direction that fits perfectly in the Berlin club scene. Your Watergate set from March because I like the combination of dirty pop remixes (from 48.30 Britney Spears) roughen with electronic sounds.
Tiefschwarz @ Watergate 12:03:11 by Souvenir Music
Third Place: & Me, "07.05.2011 Watergate"
In addition to the souvenir label are electro-moderate people of no music is miles ahead. Adam Port, Me & Rampa and are inseparable from the clubs of the capital and dominate the scene. This set has made it to the top list because some of the best remixes of 2011 featured, including the DB Edit of "Limit to Your Love" (from 41.00), who has accompanied me this year with the best club nights.

Sarah L. (Vienna): Top 3 best concerts of 2011
First Place: FM Belfast Flex, Vienna
I do not have to think that concert for me this year is the culmination. Here where you no longer can speak of a concert, it was rather a party with friends. Great atmosphere, really good music and nice people. Everything has voted on this evening in Flex!
There are no videos, which could also carry anywhere near the experience ... who was not there, has really missed something! Nevertheless, I like the very good from Prague:

Second Place: Pantha Du Prince at Pratersauna / Vienna
A.k.a. Hendrik Weber Pantha du Prince (At least that its most abundant synonym) in June Pratersauna transformed into a soundscape. He is not someone who abuses the meantime has become very commercial concept of electronic music, like many others. In his compositions still stuck true feelings, enveloped with sounds from nature, the real life. Here and there it says to listen to a breaking branch or listen to the ringing of small bells.
An evening with Pantha du Prince behind the DJ booth calls on the club-goers, on another, perhaps more beautiful, more engaging experience with electronic music. No relentlessly driving beat, the blood through the veins you can shoot and put you into ecstasy (which is also quite nice), no, here it is the creation of new worlds of sound that will take you to dream. To his music, the mass weighs more devoutly in the rhythm, but not with less joy or euphoria. The beats are definitely club ready and danceable, they are not just so sterile and lifeless, like many others, they breathe life into the genre fresh breath!

Third Place: Editor in Hamburg / MS Dockville
Yes, yes, the MS Dockville what many called "slush Ville" could be stuck in my mind, this year, despite all the little Pännchen again contributed to a lot of good musical entertainment! It's just this very special environment of the festival site, which contributes a large part of the festival feeling. The terrain at the Hamburg Elbe Island William Castle was lit up beautifully, especially in the dark and has the character of the surrounding industrial plants emit anyway, become stronger. I was so happy on the MS Dockville 2012! Musically, for me, the editor comes to a climax.

In this case (almost) better than the already great original is the Para One remix of audio, video, disco. The remix of the French is a little more towards classical electro. But for me, no ifs or buts, the seminal figure in dubstep Game 2011th And this remix makes it a try one stinkfaden 8.15 Einheitsbreinummer one of the largest crusher of the year with absolutely antisocial bassline.
